A cursory glance at page 186 in the December issue of Elle will look familiar to Lucky readers. The story, called “Camera Ready,” features a real woman (read: non-model) and shows how she dresses for her life. This month’s subject? Elle’s PR director Erin Kaplan, who is photographed while walking in front of an NYC newsstand, reading the New York Post. In the background? A copy of Elle on the newsstand, of course. But wait—Elle didn’t feature Mandy Moore on its September cover, did it? Nope—but Lucky did. In fact, ingenious retouchers over at Hachette slapped Elle’s logo on the piece, but left the image of Moore and even Lucky’s coverlines (“Mandy Moore Gets Seriously Stylish,” “Don’t Miss This Giveaway!”) intact.

I come from the clan of the movie watching, musical theater appreciating, wine tasting, cheese loving folk. You know, the indoor kids. Sure I played sports growing up. Basketball, a little volleyball and what I like to refer to as the “never to be discussed again” shot put and discus years. But that collective resume of physical activities prepared me in no way to strap a five-foot fiberglass sled to my feet.”

“Texas is probably going to get in the national championship game, and that’s when we’ll find out how good they are,” said Dennis Franchione, who coached Texas A&M for five seasons before resigning in 2007.

One of the most baffling aspects of this strange season is how quickly the reputation of the Big 12 has dropped.

The defining debate of last season was whether the Big 12 or the SEC was the country’s premier conference. The debate lasted well into the final quarter of Florida’s 24-14 victory over Oklahoma in the national title game.

This season, the Big 12 is a shadow of its former self. Adding to the mystery, Texas played a particularly weak out-of-conference schedule. The Longhorns’ only tight game came last month in a 16-13 victory in their annual neutral-site game against Oklahoma. The Sooners (6-4, 4-2), who have struggled this season, were ranked 20th at the time.

“Texas has got a good football team, but I don’t know if we know how good for sure,” Franchione said. “They’ve had no tests out of conference, really.”

Gone are the days when the nation gathered around television sets in the evening to watch, say “The Cosby Show” or “All in the Family” and then chat about it the next day at work.

Broadcast television was “a place, an arena, where ideas were presented in a fashion in which people could become attached to or explore,” said Mr. Newcomb, the professor.

“Issues with civil rights and the women’s movement were embedded into entertainment programs and people would see them and either accept it or reject it,” he said. “Today, you can watch TV and not have to be challenged.”
